Back in November, Helen Beristain was proud to vote for Donald Trump in the presidential election. However, she had no idea that his victory would lead to her own husband’s deportation.
Law Newz reported that Helen is now regretting her vote in a big way after Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials deported her husband, Roberto Beristain, last week. Roberto had come to this country in the 1990s to visit relatives and remained her illegally, later marrying Helen and having children with her.
After Trump was elected, Roberto was elected and slated for deportation even though he had documentation to work in the U.S. and had regularly been checking in with ICE agents. Though his lawyers were fighting to push back his deportation, ICE deported Roberto last week before a judge had a chance to issue a ruling in his case.
Adam Ansari, Roberto’s attorney, blasted the ICE for deporting him without even notifying his lawyers. Ansari said he only learned of his client’s deportation when a panicked Helen called him to say her husband was already in Mexico.
“This was an attempt to short-circuit the justice process by intentionally removing him before a judge could stop his removal,” Ansari said. “We were in communication with the government regarding those motions – what they failed to mention was that they were in the process of throwing him out of the country.”
“I asked to speak with my attorney, but was told there wasn’t time for that,” Roberto said. “At around 10:00 pm, I was dropped off at the Mexico-U.S. Border and walked into Mexico.”
Now, Helen can join the millions of other former Trump supporters who are deeply regretting voting for that man. What do you think about this? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section.
