Ugh. The embarrassments keep coming from the foolish Trump administration.
Trump told a rally on Saturday that Sweden was having terrible problems with violent Muslim immigrants. He told his supporters, “You look at what’s happening last night in Sweden. Sweden. Who would believe this? Sweden. They took in large numbers. They’re having problems like they never thought possible.”
There’s only one problem. There were no violent incidents involving immigrants in Sweden over the weekend.
Of course, his clueless supporters didn’t mind. They just started hooting and hollering and booing these “invisible immigrants” who were creating all this imaginary havoc in Sweden.
On Sunday, Trump apologized. Sort of. With a tweet.
“My statement as to what’s happening in Sweden was in reference to a story that was broadcast on @FoxNews concerning immigrants & Sweden,” Trump tweeted on Sunday.
Ah ha. Faux News. This is what happens when the president gets his news from his right-wing propaganda channel. He just keeps embarrassing himself.
As reported by Reuters, Sweden’s crime rate has been falling since 2005. Meanwhile, the country continues to take in in hundreds of thousands of immigrants from war-torn countries like Syria and Iraq.
Government spokesmen in Stockholm were offended and confused. The Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, Catarina Axelsson, said, “We are trying to get clarity (on President Trumps comments).”
And the Swedish embassy in the United States tweeted, “We look forward to informing the U.S. administration about Swedish immigration and integration policies.”
The former Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt also had a Twitter response for President Trump over the weekend, writing, “Sweden? Terror attack? What has he been smoking? Questions abound.”
If only Trump could just delete his Twitter account and act like an adult for the next four years, it would make being an American so much easier for all of us.
