On Wednesday Donald Trump proclaimed (via Twitter, of course) that no longer would transgender folks be entitled to either serve in the United States military.
This represents an incredible slap to the face of so many qualified individuals who can capably and honorably serve the country. The president’s daughter, Ivanka, had as recently as June tweeted, “I am proud to support my LGBTQ friends and the LGBTQ Americans who have made immense contributions to our society and economy.”
At the time, Ivanka received backlash for the hypocrisy of making such a statement, while at the same time supporting the most anti-LGBTQ presidential ticket in recent memory. As one person tweeted, “You openly supported and campaigned for the most anti-LGBTQ+ presidential ticket in recent times. Your words mean nothing to us.”
After Wednesday’s out-of-the-blue tweet about banning transgenders from military service, many in the Twittersphere again voiced their understandable displeasure with Ivanka.
Sara Lang posted this comment, “Words without actions mean nothing.”
James Corden provided the president’s daughter with this piece of advice: “Hey Ivanka, James here. Hope all is good, quick question, can you… Erm… Call your dad and have a talk.”
Postcon hangover Amy voiced the exasperation many were feeling: “Your father is trying to keep trans folk from making immense contributions to our society and economy. You want to be an ally, DO something.”
In an incredible irony, Trump, perhaps unwittingly, announced his military transgender ban on the 69th anniversary of Harry Truman signed the executive order that desegregated the US Armed Services.
The US Joint Chiefs of Staff were also blindsided by Trump’s announcement, clearly having received no prior notice of the president’s Twitter decree.
In a press conference, Army Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Milley was clearly bewildered as he stated that “We will work through the implementation guidance when we get it and then we’ll move from there.”
Now would be a good time for Ivanka to have a daughter-father heart-to-heart conversation on the wisdom and morality of discriminating against the brave and patriotic members of the LGBTQ community.
